Tight neck muscles and stiff joints often show up as a band of pressure around the head. Here is how the two are linked and how we help at our Oceanside office.

Many patients at our Oceanside office come in for neck pain and mention, almost in passing, that they also get headaches most afternoons. The two are often connected.
This guide explains how neck tension turns into a headache, what a chiropractic exam looks for, and what care looks like at our office on Vista Way.

Quick answer
Tension headaches often start in the neck. Tight muscles and stiff joints at the top of the spine can refer pain into the head, causing a dull band of pressure. A chiropractor can examine your neck, find what is driving the pain, and use adjustments, soft tissue work and corrective exercise to ease it. Sudden or severe headaches need a doctor first.
Key takeaways
The nerves at the top of your neck share pathways with nerves that sense pain in the head. When muscles and joints there are irritated, you can feel it as a headache rather than neck pain.

Long hours looking down at a screen keep those muscles working nonstop. Our article on tech neck and desk neck pain covers that habit in more detail.
| Feature | Tension-type headache | Migraine |
|---|---|---|
| Typical feeling | Dull pressure or a tight band | Throbbing or pulsing |
| Location | Both sides, forehead, temples or back of head | Often one side |
| Nausea or light sensitivity | Uncommon | Common |
| Neck stiffness | Often present | Can be present |
Your first visit starts with questions about when headaches happen, how long they last, and what you were doing beforehand.
The exam looks at posture, how each part of your neck moves, and tender points in the neck and shoulders. We also screen for signs that a medical doctor should see you first.
Care may include chiropractic adjustments to restore neck movement, soft tissue work or massage therapy to ease tight muscles, and corrective exercise to build posture endurance.
We also look at your desk setup, phone habits and sleep position, since small changes there can reduce how often headaches return.
Seek emergency care if you have
A sudden, severe headache, the worst headache of your life, a headache with fever and stiff neck, confusion, weakness, numbness, vision or speech changes, or a headache after a head injury.
Our Oceanside office at 2530 Vista Way, Suite P offers same-day appointments when available. You can also read about headache care in Oceanside. New patients can start with the $49 New Patient Special, which includes a consultation, exam and first chiropractic treatment.
We accept HSA, FSA and CareCredit, and we do not participate with most health plans. If neck pain and headaches began after a car accident, MedPay or treatment on lien may apply; see our auto accident page.

Tension headaches usually feel like dull pressure on both sides. Migraines often throb, sit on one side, and come with nausea or light sensitivity. An exam helps sort it out.
