If you were hurt in a crash and have MedPay on your auto policy, it can usually pay for chiropractic care no matter who was at fault. Here is how it works, what it covers, and the questions to ask your insurer.

One of the most common calls our front desk gets after a crash is some version of this question: "I have MedPay. Will it pay for the chiropractor?" The short answer is usually yes. The longer answer depends on your policy limit, the wording of your policy, and how the rest of your claim unfolds.
I am a chiropractor, not an insurance agent or attorney, so treat this as general information. My goal is to explain how MedPay usually works in California, what to check on your own policy, and how to use it so cost does not keep you from getting an injury examined. If you still have questions after reading, our front desk can walk through your policy information with you before your first visit.

Quick answer
Yes, in most cases. MedPay is optional coverage on a California auto policy that pays reasonable medical bills for you and your passengers after a crash, no matter who was at fault, up to your policy limit. Chiropractic care for accident injuries is usually eligible. Check your declarations page for your limit and any exclusions.
Key takeaways
Medical payments coverage, usually called MedPay, is an optional part of a California auto policy. The California Department of Insurance auto insurance guide describes it as coverage for medical expenses if you or your passengers are injured, and notes it can pay for immediate medical care no matter who is at fault.

California is an at fault state, so the other driver's liability insurance is ultimately responsible when they cause a crash. That process can take months. MedPay sits on your own policy and pays sooner, which is why it is so useful in the weeks right after an accident. It is not required by law, so many drivers do not have it or carry a small limit.
MedPay is different from personal injury protection, often called PIP, which is required in some other states. If you moved here from a PIP state, do not assume your California policy works the same way. Military families who keep an out of state policy while stationed at Camp Pendleton should check which state's rules their policy follows.
Every policy is worded differently, but this is the general pattern we see.
| Expense | Usually covered? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Chiropractic exam and adjustments for crash injuries | Usually yes | Your per person limit |
| Rehab exercise and soft tissue therapy | Usually yes, when part of the treatment plan | Whether the policy requires care to be reasonable and necessary |
| ER visit, urgent care, ambulance | Usually yes | How much of your limit these use first |
| X rays or MRI ordered for the injury | Usually yes | Whether a referral is needed |
| Care for problems that existed before the crash | Often no | How the policy handles pre existing conditions |
| Lost wages or pain and suffering | No | Those belong to a liability or other claim |
Our auto accident care page explains what to bring and what happens at the first visit.
Adjusters review MedPay bills against your records, so clear documentation matters. Each visit should note your symptoms, the exam findings, the treatment given, and how you are progressing. That is standard practice in our offices, and it means your adjuster can see why each visit was needed without long delays or repeated requests for records.
MedPay often works alongside other coverage. If the other driver caused the crash, you may also have a third party claim against their insurance. Some patients use MedPay first, then continue care on a lien that is paid when the injury claim settles. Our personal injury page covers how that works with attorneys.
Many policies give your insurer a right to be repaid from a later settlement for what it paid under MedPay. Whether and how much depends on your policy and your case, so this is a good question for your attorney before you settle anything.
Pacific Spine & Rehab does not participate with most health plans, including PPO, HMO, Medicare, Medi-Cal, and TRICARE. For accident injuries we accept MedPay and third party personal injury claims on lien. See our insurance page for details.
A small MedPay limit can be used up faster than people expect, especially if an ER visit or imaging came first. Knowing your remaining balance early lets you and your provider plan the rest of your care instead of stopping suddenly halfway through recovery.
MedPay is only useful if you use it while the injury is fresh. The most common crash injuries we see are whiplash, neck pain, lower back pain, and headaches that start at the base of the skull. Symptoms are often delayed by a day or more, so an exam within the first week is a reasonable goal.
Go to the ER first if you have
Loss of consciousness, confusion, a worsening headache, repeated vomiting, numbness or weakness in the arms or legs, trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or chest or belly pain. Emergency care comes before any insurance question.
Accident care with us usually combines chiropractic care, soft tissue work, and rehab therapy, with every visit documented for your adjuster or attorney. If your exam suggests a fracture, disc injury, or nerve problem, we refer you for imaging or to a medical specialist.
You can start at our Carlsbad auto accident office in Bressi Ranch or our Oceanside office on Vista Way. We offer same day visits most weekdays, Monday to Friday 10 AM to 6 PM and Saturday 10 AM to 4 PM, with free parking and Spanish spoken.
Usually yes. MedPay generally pays reasonable medical bills from a covered crash, including chiropractic care, up to your policy limit and regardless of fault. Check your policy for exclusions.
No. MedPay is optional coverage. Check your declarations page to see whether you have it and what your per person limit is.
Yes. MedPay pays regardless of who caused the crash, up to your limit, which is one of its main advantages.
That depends on your insurer and the circumstances of the crash. Ask your agent directly, since rate rules vary by company.
If another driver was at fault, care can often be provided on a lien against the personal injury claim. Self pay, HSA, FSA, and CareCredit are other options.
